Journey
To Lands Old & New: Telling Our Family Stories
This residency combines storytelling, creative writing and history
in an exploration of how everyday objects can trigger a kaleidoscope
of memories. Students journey with Story Laurie as she portrays
her grandmother as a young girl traveling across the Atlantic, arriving
in New York Harbor, and adapting to life in a new land. Students
are then invited to explore, write about and perform their own ancestors’
stories.
Ideal for classes studying immigration, “Journey To Lands
Old & New” was designed to help teachers meet NYS Learning
Standards for the Arts, English Language Arts and Social Studies.
Teacher prep and activity guides are provided.
This hands-on, interactive program fosters learning in the
following areas:
*Public speaking and storytelling technique
*Historical research and interviewing skills
*Creative thinking and writing
*Listening and organizational skills
*Awareness of our similarities and respect for our differences
